Heavy Rain Floods Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Three Killed as Nullah Lai Rises to Dangerous Levels

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: Torrential monsoon rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, disrupting daily life, damaging homes and roads, and leaving at least three people dead in rain-related incidents The Pakistan Meteorological Department described Tuesday’s rainfall as the heaviest in the twin cities in three years, while several areas received more than 200 millimetres of rain.

Nullah Lai Rises to Dangerous Levels

The water level in Nullah Lai rose sharply following the heavy downpour. At Katarian Bridge, the level reached around 29.5 feet, well above the evacuation threshold, while the level at Gawalmandi also reached approximately 20 feet. Warning sirens were sounded and residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas were advised to evacuate.

The flooding affected several parts of Rawalpindi, with rainwater entering houses, shops and markets. Major roads, including Murree Road and the Islamabad Expressway, were also affected by accumulated water.

Three People Killed

According to reports, three people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents. A 20-year-old man, Faizan Ashraf, was killed when the roof of a makeshift house collapsed in G-14, while another man was critically injured.In another incident, a 17-year-old teenager, Yahswa Azhar, drowned in rainwater in a nullah near Esa Nagri in I-9/1.An additional fatality was reported in Rawalpindi in connection with the severe rainfall.

Rescue Operations Intensified

Rescue 1122 teams were deployed across vulnerable areas and evacuated dozens of people trapped by floodwater. According to reports, 60 people were evacuated in Rawalpindi, including passengers stranded near Rahimabad Bridge and residents from low-lying areas

The Rawalpindi administration placed relevant departments on high alert and advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from Nullah Lai and other drains.

The Pakistan Army has also been called in to assist with rescue and relief operations as authorities continue to respond to the flooding.

Authorities have warned that further rainfall could worsen the situation, particularly in low-lying areas and locations near Nullah Lai and other drainage channels.Residents have been urged to remain alert, avoid flooded roads and drains, and follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities.
