on February 9, 1984, during the dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq, student unions were officially banned in Pakistan. This move was part of Zia’s broader effort to suppress political activism and dissent, particularly among students, who had historically played a major role in shaping political movements in the country.
In response to the ban, students from Mirpurkhas as in many other parts of Pakistan—gathered to demand the restoration of student unions. The student unions had long been a powerful platform for youth to raise their voices against dictatorship, fight for democratic rights, and address student issues.
